Mirena IUD Contraception- Botany Road Doctors Rosebery Sydney
An IUD insertion (intrauterine device insertion) is a medical procedure where a healthcare provider places a small, T-shaped device into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It releases a hormone called levonorgestrel, which helps prevent pregnancy in several ways:
It thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.
It thins the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of implantation.
It can sometimes suppress ovulation.
Preparation:
The provider reviews your medical history and explains the procedure.
You may be advised to take pain relief medication beforehand.
Insertion:
You’ll lie on an exam table, similar to a pelvic exam.
A speculum is inserted to view the cervix.
The cervix is cleaned, and a thin tube (the inserter) is used to place the IUD into the uterus.
The strings attached to the IUD are trimmed to the right length.
Aftercare:
Mild cramping or spotting is common for a few days.
You may be advised to check the IUD strings periodically.
A follow-up visit may be scheduled to ensure proper placement.
Types of IUDs:
Hormonal IUDs (e.g., levonorgestrel-based) — release hormones to prevent pregnancy for 3–8 years.
Copper IUDs — non-hormonal, effective for up to 10–12 years.
Benefits:
Long-term, reversible contraception. Fertility typically returns few months after removal.
Highly effective (over 99%).
Minimal maintenance once inserted.
Can help reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and menstrual cramps.
Possible side effects:
Cramping or irregular bleeding initially.
Rarely, expulsion or perforation of the uterus.
If you’re considering an IUD, it’s best to discuss options, benefits, and risks with a healthcare provider.
