What is iron deficiency?

Iron deficiency occurs when your body does not have enough iron to meet its needs. If iron levels become too low, it can affect the production of healthy red blood cells and may lead to iron deficiency anaemia.

There are many possible causes of low iron, including dietary factors, blood loss, increased iron requirements and difficulty absorbing iron.

When should you speak to a GP?

Consider speaking with your GP if you:

  • have low iron identified on a blood test

  • have been diagnosed with iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia

  • experience ongoing tiredness, weakness, dizziness or shortness of breath

  • have heavy periods or another possible source of blood loss

  • have difficulty absorbing nutrients

  • are pregnant or planning a pregnancy and are concerned about your iron levels

  • have previously had difficulty tolerating iron supplements.

How iron deficiency is assessed and managed

1. GP consultation

Your GP will review your symptoms, medical history and any previous blood test results.

2. Blood tests and investigating the cause

If appropriate, your GP may arrange blood tests to assess your iron levels and determine whether further investigation is required.

3. Dietary advice

Depending on the cause and severity of your iron deficiency, your GP may discuss dietary changes and ways to increase your intake of iron-rich foods.

4. Iron supplementation

Your GP may recommend an oral iron supplement where appropriate and provide advice about how it should be taken.

5. Further treatment options

If dietary changes or oral supplements are not suitable or do not adequately address your iron deficiency, your GP can discuss further treatment options. Where clinically appropriate, some treatments may be provided onsite at Botany Road Doctors following assessment.
