What is an iron infusion?

An iron infusion is a medical procedure where iron is given directly into your bloodstream through a vein. It may be recommended if your iron levels are low, or if iron tablets are not suitable or have not worked well for you.

When might you need one?

Your GP may discuss an iron infusion if you have:

  • low iron levels confirmed by a blood test

  • iron deficiency anaemia

  • side effects from iron tablets

  • difficulty absorbing iron

  • ongoing fatigue linked to low iron

  • low iron during pregnancy

  • a medical condition where oral iron is not suitable

How the process works

1. Book a GP consultation
Your GP will assess your symptoms, medical history and whether an iron infusion may be suitable.

2.Complete a blood test
If needed, your GP will refer you for a blood test to check your iron levels.

3. Get your prescription
If your results show that an iron infusion is needed, your GP will provide a prescription for the iron and infusion kit. You can collect your prescribed iron from the pharmacy before your infusion appointment, we have one right next to our practice.

4. Book your infusion appointment
Once you have your prescription, book your iron infusion appointment with Botany Road Doctors.

On the day of your appointment

Please:

  • arrive at least 5 minutes early

  • bring your prescribed iron and infusion kit

  • bring any recent blood test results or medical records

  • allow up to 1 hour at the clinic

  • let your doctor or nurse know if you feel unwell during the infusion

A GP and registered nurse will supervise your care during the appointment.

What happens during the infusion?

A nurse will place a small IV line into a vein, usually in your arm or hand. The iron is then given through a drip.

Your nurse may check your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and breathing rate before, during or after the infusion. Healthdirect notes that patients are usually monitored after the infusion to check for any reaction.

Possible side effects

Most people tolerate iron infusions well. Possible side effects may include:

  • headache

  • dizziness

  • nausea

  • metallic taste

  • muscle or joint pain

  • changes to blood pressure or pulse

  • redness or discomfort near the IV site

Serious allergic reactions are rare, but your doctor and nurse will monitor you during the appointment.
