Osteoporosis, Bone Density Scans & the Bone Bus

Osteoporosis is a long-term condition that causes bones to become weaker and more likely to break. Many people do not know they have osteoporosis until they experience a fracture, such as a broken hip or wrist.

Osteopenia is an earlier stage of bone loss. Both conditions can be managed with lifestyle changes and medication, particularly when detected early.

What is a bone density scan?

A bone density scan is a simple, painless test that measures bone strength. The scan takes around 15 minutes and helps identify bone loss before fractures occur.

The Bone Bus at our clinic

As part of our commitment to preventative health, a mobile Bone Density Scanning Bus (Bone Bus) will be visiting our clinic on the 17-18th March 2026 to provide convenient onsite scans.

These scans are:

  • Free (bulk billed) with Medicare for eligible patients

  • Available to patients aged 70 years and over

  • For those who have not had a scan in the past 2 years

  • GP referral required

Patients must book a GP appointment prior to the scan to obtain a referral.

Why bone health matters

Early detection can reduce the risk of falls, fractures, and loss of mobility. Fractures can have long-term physical and emotional impacts, particularly as we age.

Supporting healthy bones

You can help maintain strong bones by:

  • Eating calcium-rich foods

  • Getting regular sunlight for vitamin D

  • Reducing alcohol intake

  • Avoiding smoking or vaping

  • Staying physically active

If you or a family member may be at risk, please speak with your GP or contact the clinic to book an appointment.
