Heart health checks

A Heart Health Check helps assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 5 years. It may include blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, lifestyle factors and family history.

Your GP can discuss your results and recommend steps to reduce your risk. Check our blog post for more information and who is eligible.

Blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes risk

Many long-term conditions develop slowly and may not cause symptoms early on.

Your GP may recommend checks for:

  • high blood pressure

  • high cholesterol

  • diabetes or pre-diabetes

  • kidney function

  • weight-related health risks

  • family history of heart disease, stroke or diabetes

Cancer screening advice

Your GP can help you understand which screening checks may be relevant for your age, symptoms and family history.

This may include:

  • skin cancer checks

  • cervical screening

  • breast screening discussions

  • bowel cancer screening advice

  • prostate health discussions where relevant

In Australia, people aged 45 to 74 can screen for bowel cancer using a free home test every 2 years. Women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 are invited to have a Cervical Screening Test every 5 years.

Lifestyle and wellbeing review

Preventative health is not only about tests. A GP can also help you review everyday factors that affect your long-term health, including:

  • diet and exercise

  • sleep and fatigue

  • stress and mental health

  • smoking or vaping

  • alcohol use

  • weight changes

  • medications and supplements

Vaccinations and immunisation updates

Your GP can check whether your vaccines are up to date and discuss any immunisations recommended for your age, health conditions, work or travel plans.

This may include flu vaccines, COVID vaccines, childhood catch-up vaccines, travel vaccines or vaccines for people with higher health risks.
